Highs & Lows and everything in between

It is virtually impossible to condense the last 10 days into one blog post so I am going to use point form as the most effective way to capture our recent trip to the Peg and our family cottage.

The Good:
* My husband won the annual crib & bocce tourneys even with a fractured ankle. This was his second year of domination as he won both events last year as well.
* Seeing our children play at the cottage the way I used to when I was a kid. Fishing, boat rides, catching minnows and making forts. The joy I felt seeing the next generation explore and discover the wonders of nature and experience lake life cannot be put into words.
* Getting together with my bestest girlfriends for a night out at the Keg.
* Visiting with my great Aunt who is 95 years young on her farm just outside the city. Even though I haven’t been there for over 20 years, not much had changed.
* A quick stop in Calgary to visit my Dad’s brother and his wife. As my uncle somewhat resembles my father, in some weird way, this gives me an idea of what it would have been like for my dad to interact with the grandchildren he never got to meet.

The Bad:
* Gaining 5 pounds from eating and drinking non stop. It’s a wonder your shorts don’t fit when it is happy hour for 12 or 14 hours a day.
* More mosquito bites than you could count.
* Only swimming in the lake twice in 6 days due to the unseasonably cool August long weekend weather.
* Not making much progress on RK’s. There isn’t much you can do when you don’t have internet connectivity.
* Being in our parents house for the last time before the new owners take possession. Farewell “390″ and thanks for the memories.

The Ugly:
* Spending 2 hours in a Calgary hospital emergency room to treat my son for a mild concussion after he was running mock 3 and head butted the corner of my Aunt & Uncle’s end table. Ouch.
* Going through and dividing up the contents of our parents house and bickering over who gets the wagon we rode in when we were kids.
* After being on the road for 19 hours and driving through treacherous road conditions including landslide detours, fog, torrential rain and the same kids DVDS playing over and over … only to find out that the hotel we had a reservation with did not have a room for us!

All in all it was another great trip but definitely not without it’s difficult moments. It was bizarre to leave Winnipeg knowing that I would never be able to go back to the only house I ever knew growing up. I only hope the new owners and their family enjoy the house and the neighborhood and that they create as many fond memories over their years there as we Thompsons did.
